Ferroelectric liquid crystal display device. This device comprises a first display cell 30a, interposed between a first and a second crossed polariser 32, 34 enclosing a first ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 42a interposed between a first electrode 44a and a first backing electrode 46a of appropriate shape for the display; a second display cell 30b, arranged between the second polariser 34 and the first display cell 30a, enclosing a second ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 42b interposed between a second electrode 44b and a second backing electrode 46b and means 50a, 50b for delivering to the electrodes and backing electrodes alternating electrical signals serving to control an electrooptical property of the first and second liquid crystals. <IMAGE>
