PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of detecting breakage as the used time passes and to cope with a secular change as will automatically by detecting the breakage of a tool on the basis of an AE signal available from an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and confirming the breakage by a numerically controlled device. CONSTITUTION:The AE sensor 6 installed in the vicinity of the tool of a machine tool detects the AE signal from the tool such as a drill 2 and that from a spurious breakage signal generator 4, and outputs them to an AE signal processing part 7. It stores the output signal in a cyclical memory device, detects signals showing the breakage of the tool and the abnormal cutting, and gives them to a CPU 9 through an I/O interface 8. If the breakage is detected by the processing part 7, the CPU 9 executes the breakage together with the numerically controlled device 3, holds sequentially non-breakage detection data in an RAM 11 at the time of erroneous breakage, discriminates similarities to said data when the processing part 7 detects the breakage afterward, and controls such that the breakage of the tool can be outputted outside. |
