This device ensures tensioning of a canvas sheet 1, opened out above a construction such as a verandah 2. Parallel cables 7, passing over return pulleys 8, each have a strand 9 attached to the free end 4 of the canvas sheet and a strand 10 which is wound up on a drum 13. The frustoconical drums 13 are borne by a shaft 14 driven in rotation by a motor 6 controlling the unwinding and winding-up of the canvas sheet 1. Each return pulley 8 is borne by a slide 18 acted upon by a spring 20. Application: verandahs, pergolas, greenhouses (conservatories). <IMAGE>
