The invention relates to a method and a device for recording and reproducing sound and/or an image with digital coding, requiring no electromechanical unit. According to the invention, while recording, use is made of a matrix-scan electroluminescent screen 7 digitally modulated with the signal which it is desired to record, the image of this screen being projected onto a photosensitive support 14. During reproduction, the image of a screen scanned according to the same standards, but without modulation, is projected onto this correctly positioned support. The scattered or transmitted light is then gathered by a photographic cell or the like, then following conversion and amplification, is transmitted to an appropriate transducer. <IMAGE>
