In order to be able to configure the external geometry of a heater in a more variable fashion, and to achieve a flexible adaptation to installation requirements prescribed in each case, without having to accept a significant loss in heating power, the invention specifies a heat exchanger which has an external contour which deviates from the shape of a circle and expediently approaches the rectangular shape or the square shape. In order in such a design to avoid temperature peaks on the heat exchanger as seen over the circumference, the heat transfer at the outer surface of the heat exchanger, which is swept over by the heating-air flow prescribed by the external geometry of the heater, is taken as reference point, and in a corresponding way the heat transfer at the inner surface, which is swept over by the flue gas, is formed such that the heat transfer of the inner surface is matched to the heat transfer of the outer surface. In accordance with one embodiment, the outer longitudinal ribs are dimensioned in this case of unequal length, and in the case of the longer outer longitudinal ribs some of these are activated for heat transfer by arranging for the flue gas channel to extend partially into the outer longitudinal rib.
