PURPOSE:To perform the detection of phase angle accurately all the time, by dividing a reference signal and a timing signal, while using the phase difference signal obtained in finding the exclusive OR, and detecting the phase angle of a timing control device with total time of the phase difference signal included in a rotational period. CONSTITUTION:An injection timing signal (a) obtained by a solenoid pickup 5b of a timing signal detector 4 and a reference signal (b) obtained by another solenoid pickup 4b of a reference signal detector 4 are divided by each divider inside an electronic control unit 6 whereby each of signals (c) and (d) is secured. Since the signal (c) comes into a state of making its phase advance forward to the signal (d) as long as the time corresponding to the phase angle, if each exclusive OR of these signals (c) and (d) is found, a phase difference signal (e) is formed there. Accordingly, this signal (e) is counted with a short clock pulse, and among these count numbers, a phase difference between input and output shafts of a timing control device 2 is calculated from a ratio between total time of the phase difference signal included in a period T per rotation of a cam shaft 31 and the said period T.
