A device is described for covering the elongated slot (34) which is provided in one housing wall (36) of a microtome (10) and through which there extends an object holding device (32) which can move in a linearly oscillating manner. The device is constructed as a covering plate (38) through which the object holding device (32) extends. The covering plate (38) is supported such that it can pivot about a bearing device (40) which is provided on the housing wall (36), laterally alongside the elongated slot (34). The bearing device can be arranged in a fixed position on the housing wall (36) and the covering plate (38) can be constructed with a bearing opening (64) which is constructed as an elongated hole and through which the bearing device (34) extends. <IMAGE>
