It is discriminated that the timer 20 counts up, and then, a change over circuit 36 selects a pulse signal P2 from an optical sensor circuit 30 by a change over command signal P3 outputted through the I/O section 22. Corresponding to a variable density period of a density pattern 18 detected by an optical sensor 19, the period is gradually enlarged, so that a retreating speed of a motor 2 for driving the scanning base is gradually decelerated. When a CPU discriminated that the scanning base reaches to a home position sensor 5, the motor 2 is stopped.
