To construct a tunnel tube (1), an arched roof (2) is constructed on the base of an open trench and then a hollow space is excavated underground underneath the roof (2). During the excavation of the hollow space, lateral-pressure abutments (4) of the roof (2) which are accessible from below are pushed into the arches (9) and anchored. Until the side walls (3) of the tunnel tube (1) withstanding the rock pressure are constructed, these lateral-pressure abutments (4) secure the hollow space and underpin the roof (2), the feet (5) of which have been produced in a thickness which corresponds to at least the thickness of the side walls (3) of the tunnel tube (1) and the thickness of the hollow-space side-wall sheeting (7) containing the arches (9). <IMAGE>
