PURPOSE:To count frames and discriminate sizes of frames by detecting and counting a retrieval mark provided on each frame of a film by the first detector and detecting whether the mark exists on an adjacent frame or not by the second detector. CONSTITUTION:With respect to mark detectors, the second detector 26 which detects whether a mark 16 exists on an adjacent frame or not is provided besides the first detector for frame number counting. Each time the incident light of the first detector 25 is intercepted by the mark 16, a high-level pulse signal is outputted to an amplifying circuit 60, and counted contents of a counter 70 and a desired frame number are compared with each other by a comparing circuit 71; and if they coincide with each other, a high-level pulse signal is sent to a driving system control circuit 72 to stop traversing a film F, and the driving stop signal is sent to an AND gate 63. The second detector 26 detects whether the mark exists on an adjacent frame 102 or not then and outputs a high-level pulse signal to an amplifier 61, and the signal of 'half' is sent to a frame size selecting part 73 by the output of the AND gates.
