PURPOSE:To make the control of steel pipe temp. with the higher accuracy possible by measuring the roughness on the surface of a steel pipe to be treated prior to the insertion thereof into a furnace, determining the total area per unit area of the steel pipe and controlling the furnace temp. of each furnace block. CONSTITUTION:The steel pipe 11 is inserted into a continuous treatment furnace 1 and is conveyed successively by rollers 10 in a preheating furnace 2, heating furnaces 3-7 and holding furnaces 8, 9, by which the steel pipe is subjected to a heat treatment. The treated pipe is ejected from a furnace outlet 12. The roughness on the surface of the steel pipe 11 is measured by a roughness measuring instrument 15 prior to the insertion of the steel pipe 11 into the furnace 1 and is outputted to a relational comparator 16. The total area per unit area of the steel pipe 11 is calculated from the measured value in the relational comparator 16 and is reflected to the heat treatment control cycle determined by taking the size, material quality, etc., of the steel pipe 11 into consideration, by which the furnace temp. or conveying speed of each block of the furnace 1 is controlled.
