PURPOSE:To obtain simply acicular magnesia by adding a prescribed amount of a mineral acid to an aqueous slurry of a powdered Mg compound as a starting material, subjecting the slurry to hydrothermal treatment, and heating the resulting acicular Mg compound to a high temp. CONSTITUTION:A powdered Mg compound as a starting material is slurrified by adding water in 0.02-0.12 weight ratio of the starting material/water. A mineral acid (salt) is added to the slurry in 0.1-1.0 molar ratio of the mineral acid/Mg, and the slurry is subjected to hydrothermal treatment at >=150 deg.C (wet hot water synthesis treatment in an autoclave). By the treatment, an acicular Mg compound made of a composite salt consisting of Mg hydroxide and the oxide of the mineral acid salt of Mg is formed. The Mg compound is washed, dried and backed to obtain acicular MgO.
