PURPOSE:To form an optical liquid shutter which permits the easy reduction of a thickness by sealing an opaque liquid into the space between upper and lower substrates where an optical circuit switching part made transparent and providing a liquid heating means which is driven by an external signal to the optical circuit switching part. CONSTITUTION:The opaque liquid 7 is sealed into a liquid chamber 6 formed by delineating the space formed between the upper and lower transparent substrates 1 and 2 by a sealing material 5 and the transparent heating element 8 connected to an electric power source not shown via an electrode 9 is attached to the inside surface of one substrate 2 to form the optical shutter. An impulsive voltage is impressed to the optical liquid shutter constituted in such a manner, then the opaque liquid 7 sealed into the chamber 6 is overheated upon lapse of the slight time after the impression of the voltage by the Joule heat generated in the element 8 and foam (a) is generated in the overheated part. The foam contacts with the inside surfaces of the upper and lower substrates 1, 2 and makes temporarily light-transmittable said part.
