PURPOSE:To produce an alcohol in improved yield, reducing the recovery and cooling costs and preventing the contamination with sundry germs, by adding an alcohol to a medium for the fermentation with a microorganism belonging to Clostridium genus. CONSTITUTION:Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum is inoculated in a medium containing a carbon source (e.g. glucose), a nitrogen source, inorganic ions, organic nutrient source, etc., and cultured at 55-62 deg.C and 5-8pH for 1-4 days under anaerbic condition. In the above process, the medium is added with 0.1-1vol% alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc., or their combination) between the initial stage of the cultivation and the final state of the logarithmic proliferation, at a same time or in divided manner. An alcohol mixture composed of 50-60% ethanol and 30-40% butanol is produced together with small amounts of organic acids such as acetic acid, butyric acid, etc., can be produced by this fermentiation process.
