PURPOSE:To increase the luminous output of an electrodeless electric-discharge lamp for the near ultraviolet region by charging the translucent case of the lamp, which is excited by microwaves to emit light, with a rare gas, mercury and a chloride of osmium, ruthenium or a similar element. CONSTITUTION:An electrodeless electric-discharge lamp 6 is produced by using a hollow cylindrical translucent case 7, which consists of a semispherical closed surface 8 and a closed surface which has a concave area 9 for accomodating an antenna 5 in the center, and chargintg the case 7 with a rare gas such as argon, mercury and at least one compound of the chloride of osmium, ruthenium, rhodium or rhenium. The lamp 6 is installed in a reflector 10 closed with a metallic mesh plate 11. Microwaves from a magnetron 1 are radiated through the antenna 5 upon the lamp 6 to make it emit light. Due to the above structure, the output of the lamp 6 for the near ultraviolet region can be greatly increased by properly selecting the amount of the chloride of osmium or a similar element charged in the lamp.
