1,2-Dihydro 6-methyl 2-oxo 5-(4'-pyridinyl) nicotino-nitrile is made by (a) reacting 1-(4'-pyridinyl)2-propanone with morpholine in benzene under reflux; (b) reacting the amine formed with 2-chloroacetonitrile in acetonitrile at ambient temp. and hydrolysis at reflux temp.; (c) cyclising the prod. by dehydration in benzene, in presence of piperidine and acetic acid under reflux; and (d) oxidn. by treatment with 2,3-dichloro 5,6-dicyano 1,4-benzoquinone in dioxane at 105 deg.C. deg.C.
