PURPOSE:To obtain a surface treated steel sheet having superior resistance to corrosion and leaving of fingerprints and superior adhesion by applying a mixed aqueous soln. contg. polyvinyl alcohol and chromate to a Zn or Zn alloy plated steel sheet and by irradiating active energy beams. CONSTITUTION:A mixed aqueous soln. contg. at least one between polyvinyl alcohol and modified polyvinyl alcohol and at least one between chromate and dichromate in 100:10-100:80 weight ratio is prepd. The aqueous soln. is applied to the surface of a Zn or Zn alloy plated steel sheet optionally after the surface is phosphated or chromated and active energy beams such as ultraviolet rays are irradiated.
