PURPOSE:To make multifarious use of an 8mm video tape by recording a PCM signal in an area in which a horizontal synchronizing signal in a video signal area is to be recorded. CONSTITUTION:An area L3 (the third area) in which horizontal synchronizing signals of the number of rasters (normally 262) of a cathode-ray tube is to be present for 1 field (1 track) of the cathode-ray tube exists in an audio signal area L. Additional video signals or audio signals, other than original video signals or audio signals, having function of a horizontal synchronizing signal and can be utilized for optional video information or audio information are recorded in such an area L3 in place of original horizontal synchronizing signal. Thus, the demand to a video tape for high sound quality of audio or high density of video information can be complied with.
