发明名称 Cord handle forming and applying machine
摘要 881,426. Applying handles to paper bags. EQUITABLE PAPER BAG CO. Inc. May 15, 1958, No. 15630/58. Classes 94(2) and 133. A cord handle applying machine comprises means for guiding a travelling paper bag web along a path traversing a cord handle applying station, means in advance of said station for applying spaced spots of adhesive to said web means at said station for feeding cord handles so that a handle is-registered with each spot, and means for feeding paper patches to said web on top of said handle legs and in registration with said spots. General arrangement. The web W, Fig. 10, is fed from a roll 60 between rollers 61 which mark off the bag lengths by transverse rows of perforations. Two solid rectangular patches of adhesive are applied to each bag length by a rotary element 65 and a longitudinal strip of adhesive is applied by a second rotary element 64, this strip serving to close the seam when the web is subsequently tubed. The web is then directed between rollers 63a, 63b at which point the legs of two U-shaped cord handles CH are brought into contact with the adhesive and a paper patch PR cut from a web P by rollers 68 is placed on top of each patch of adhesive. There are two webs P, one for each handle applying station and each web is printed by a roller 69 with two parallel lines of adhesive which register with the handle legs when the paper patch is applied to the web, thereby fixing the handles securely to the web. The patches are pressed down by two sets of rollers 70 of which the upper ones are circumferentially grooved so as to accommodate the handle legs and are raised intermittently by cams to allow the cross-bars of the handles to pass thereunder. Bands 74 passing round rollers 75 press down the portions of each patch PR outside the legs of the handles CH as the web is passing over rollers 73 ; soft, resilient rolls 76, 77 also press on the patches PR at the same time as the bands 74. Thereafter the web is formed into a tube and severed along the lines of perforations produced by the rollers 61, the bottoms being seamed to complete the bags which each have two handles. Cord handle feeding means. Each handle forming and applying station includes a platform 1 laterally movable on rods 2 so as to accommodate different widths of web. Three vertical supports 8, 9, 10 are secured to the upper face of each platform and mounted between them on a shaft 12 are drums 11 which are concentric and flush with the semicircular upper ends of the supports. The shaft 12 is rotated continuously by gearing 14, 20 and through bevel gears 21, Fig. 5, and gears 24, 25 drives a pair of rollers 28 which feed cord C from a spool through a tube 29 and into a cord die 30a. The supports 8, 9, 10 have aligned shelf portions 8a, 9a, 10a respectively on to which a length of the cord C is fed, the cord then being severed by a rotating knife 31 mounted on the shaft 12. To guide the cord on to the shelves and prevent its buckling thereon an arcuate cover 35, mounted on a bellcrank lever 36 actuated by a cam 49, is moved radially into contact with the support 8, as shown in Fig. 4, through a suitable aperture in a roof 53 which is mounted above the supports 8, 9, 10; a similar cover 40, Fig. 8, is moved into contact with the support 9. When the cord length is positioned on the shelves a presser 45, cam actuated in a similar way to the covers 35, 40, grips the middle portion thereof against the shelf 9a, the cover 35 is moved away from the support 8 and forming members 11a on the drums 11 engage the end portions of the cord length and bend them at right angles to the middle portion, until they engage wheels 55 which are carried by a frame 56, Fig. 5, and which are spring-biased into contact with the drums 11. The cover 40 and presser 45 are then moved away from the support 9 and abutments 11b on the rollers 11 engage behind the middle portion of the cord handle and propel it round the semi-circular upper-surface of the support. 8 until it is stripped off the drums 11 by strippers and fed between the rollers 63a, 63b on to the patch of adhesive on the web W.
