PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compsn. which improves dry and wet paper strength over a wide range and allows the maceration of waste paper to be well conducted, by adding glyoxal or aldehydostarch to a polymer emulsion of a specified styrene. CONSTITUTION:A compsn. is obtd. by adding glyoxal or aldehydostarch to a polymer emulsion obtd. by emulsion-polymerizing styrene monomer by using a water-soluble high-molecular compd. mainly composed of a cationic polyacrylamide as protective colloid. Pref. the compsn. consists of 15-80wt% (on a resin basis) cationic polyacrylamide, 20-85wt% styrene and 2-30wt% glyoxal or aldehydostarch. The compsn. can be effectively used for acidic paper obtd. by using aluminium sulfate as well as neutral paper, and as a surface treating agent for paper.
