PURPOSE:To shorten the access time by mounting plural independently operated optical heads on a carriage driven by a voice coil motor VCM. CONSTITUTION:Two optical heads each of which is provided with an objective lens 3, a focus coil 4, and a gimbals 5 supporting them are arranged in a column on a supporting arm 6, and two supporting arms 6 are mounted on a carriage 7. The carriage 7 is driven by a linear motor 10 and is moved in the direction of arrows X-X' to guide optical heads 2 to a desired track. When an access command is issued to optical heads 2 arranged properly distributedly in individual positions on both faces of a disc medium 1, the optical head 2 which is held in the position nearest to a desired track is guided onto this track; and thus, the time required for arrival at this track is shortened certainly in comparison with a conventional structure.
