In a chopping machine for brush wood and offal timber, which has a driven cutter wheel (2) which bears chopper blades (6) which project above the end face pointing towards a horizontally arranged inlet duct (9) and interact with stationary counter-blades (7) there is provided in the inlet duct (9) a drawing-in apparatus (10, 11) which is intended to impart to the material which is to be disintegrated an advancing motion towards the end face of the cutter wheel and which comprises drivable drawing-in rolls which are arranged vertically and parallel to the end face of the cutter wheel (2) and of which one (11) can be adjusted against restoring springs (20) for setting the inlet gap. In order to prevent residual matter from accumulating in the inlet duct (9) and to prevent the movable drawing-in roll (11) from becoming jammed by such residual matter, there is provided for this adjustable drawing-in roll (11), which is only over-mounted above, a parallel guide (13-19, 23, 24) which guides the drawing-in roll (11) parallel to the end face of the cutter wheel (2). <IMAGE>
