The information medium is produced with the aid of a matrix body (M) which at first has all character elements (2) of possible characters. In order to form a specific character, some character elements (2) are removed by breaking out. Then the matrix body (M) is cast in a casting composition in such a manner that only the remaining character elements (2), which together form a character, are visible. An information medium thus formed is secure against forgery and wear resistant. It is therefore especially suitable for packaging containers which are used repeatedly, such as, for example, beer barrels. <IMAGE>
