Effective catalyst for polymerization of α-olefins under the Ziegler polymerization condition comprises (A) reaction product or complex of a transition metal compd. and non-reductive alkylation agent; (B) a mixture of organo-magnesium compd. and magnesium halide produced by reaction with a halide source, e.g., active nonmetallic halide or metal halide; and (C) an aluminum compd. Atomic ratios of Mg/Tm, Zn/ Tm, O/Tm, Al/Tm, and excess X/Al are 1-200, 0.1-10, 0.1-4, 0.1-200, and 0.0005-5, respectively; where Tm = transion metal selected from IVB, VB, or VIB gp.; and X = halogen.
