The invention relates to the production of hydrogen gas from hot water by means of a metal catalyst such as nickel powder and a chelating agent such as EDTA. The temperature of the water is from about 60 to 150 DEG C and advantageously does not lie above the boiling point of the water. The water is advantageously heated by waste heat and the hydrogen is used as supplementary fuel for fossil fuels such as gas, oil or coal. Increased hydrogen production is achieved by subjecting the water mixture to a magnetic field or to treatment with ultrasound.
