A punching apparatus for processing metal sheets or the like consists of a press ram, which can be moved up and down, for receiving a press or punching tool part and of a rotatable punching table with a plurality of table surfaces for the reception of complementary press or punching tool parts. To ensure that the punching apparatus permits very accurate punching while having a long service life, the punching table is arranged in the punching apparatus in a manner which allows it to be rotated in a plane perpendicular to the direction of motion of the press ram and an abutment for supporting the punching table during the punching operation is arranged underneath the punching table in the punching apparatus.
