PURPOSE:To increase the degree of freedom and also to simplify the selection of protocol communication functions by incorporating previously plural protocol communication functions and selecting either one of these functions by a selecting means for communication to perform various types of protocol communication just with a single transmitter-receiver. CONSTITUTION:An operator supplies first a program through a key input part 1 and gives a command for protocol communication. When the protocol communication is started by a program, a CPU 3 produces a protocol mode signal of logic level '1' and gives it to a latch 7. Thus a gate G1 is opened with a gate G2 closed, and a protocol module 6A is active within a communication processing part 6. At the same time, a no-procedure module 6B is inactive. Then the transmission or reception of data is started actually and the CPU 3 delivers a transmission instruction signal of '1' to open a gate circuit G3 and also delivers a reception instruction signal of '0' to close a gate circuit G4 in a transmission mode.
