PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for the production of fine powder of tin oxide for coating use, in high yield and purity, at a low cost, by mixing anhydrous tin chloride with a dechlorination agent in an inert solvent, and adding an alcohol to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:Anhydrous tin chloride (e.g. tetrachlorotin) is mixed with a dechlorination agent (preferably and amine) in an inert solvent such as n-hexane under refluxing for e.g. 1 hr, and an alcohol (preferably a >=3C alcohol such as t-butyl alcohol) is added to the system and refluxed. The reaction mixture is purified by the direct distillation to obtain the objective tin alkoxide. The precipitated amine chloride is treated with an alkali (usually Na, NaOH, etc.) and the recovered amine is reused.
