PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a drug, by subjecting an optical isomer mixture of prostaglandin methyl ester to asymmetric hydrolysis with an enzyme. CONSTITUTION:An optical isomer mixture of 2-4 prostaglandin methyl esters shown by the formula (X is S, or -CH-, when X is S, A is H, and B shows nothing, when X is -CH, both A and B are H or each shows bond, mutually forms covalent bond; C is OH, or H, when C is OH, dotted line shows nothing, when C is H, dotted line is C-C bond; D and E are OH, or H and neither OH nor H simultaneously; R1 is H, or methyl; R2 is 3-6C alkyl) is hydrolyzed with an enzyme (e.g., swine liver esterase). In the middle of the reaction, the reaction is completed, the blending ratio of 2-4 optical isomers of starting substance is changed by a common procedure and an optical active substance is separated to give the aimed substance.
