The cutting mechanism for the document shredder is driven via a two-part clutch. In forward motion, the two clutch shells are connected to each other by means of elastic elements which are pressed together to a greater or lesser extent as a function of the load. In both clutch shells are arranged openings which, in non-overloaded forward motion, open the ray path of a light barrier attached on both sides of the clutch shells several times per rotation. In the case of overload, the openings become displaced and the ray path of the light barrier is permanently closed. The ray path of the light barrier is also interrupted in reverse motion since the clutch shells become displaced slightly with respect to forward motion. An electronic evaluation circuit can thus distinguish between forward motion, overload and reverse motion and give corresponding control commands to the drive motor.
