When renewing sewage pipes (1), a vibrating hammer head (15) is drawn through an existing sewage pipe (1) by means of a winch (5) and breaks up the pipe and presses the resulting pipe fragments into the ground round about it and draws in a new pipe directly behind it. In order to avoid the resulting pipe fragments damaging the pipe when drawing it in and to protect the pipe after it has been fitted, metal bands (13) distributed around the pipe are drawn in together with the hammer head (15). An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a vibrating hammer head (15) and a winch (5) for drawing the hammer head (15) through an existing sewage pipe (1). The hammer head (15) exhibits bracing arrangements (37) for bracing a number of metal bands (13), at the ends thereof, around the pipe, and the hammer head further exhibits bracing members for bracing the pipe within the metal bands (13). <IMAGE>
