In order to detoxify exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, which are operated using lead-containing fuel or must be operated using lead-containing fuel for reasons of construction, in accordance with the environmental protection regulations and to prevent catalysts being destroyed by sucking in lead-containing exhaust gases of other engines, a process is described which, with the aid of cheap materials in a vortex chamber, removes both lead and sulphur from the exhaust gases. In a downstream catalyst stage composed of palladium catalyst segments arranged in layers and having electrical heating, the remaining pollutants CH, NOx and CO are converted to H2O, N2 and CO2 and mechanically filtered. The exhaust of toxic platinum compounds and ruthenium compounds is prevented by the use of palladium and a corresponding filter.
