Pharmaceutical compositions contain as an active ingredient oxaluric acid derivatives of the formula (I):

<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="18" wi="44" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry><!-- EPO <DP n="2"> -->and each of R<Sub>3</Sub> and R<Sub>4</Sub>, which may be the same or different, represents hydrogen, halogen, a nitro group or a lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and metal complexes thereof. The compositions have hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic acitivity. Several of the compounds disclosed are novel per se.
