The invention described herein is a sterilizable reference electrode suitable for use in medical applications. The electrode is formed by dip-coating a metal/metal halide electrode in a saturated aqueous solution of a soluble salt of the halide. The electrode is then dried and dipped in a nonaqueous solution of a hydrophobic membrane material to produce a layer over the salt layer which is permeable to ionic current-carrying species in a nonspecific manner. The resulting electrode can then be inserted into a lumen of a catheter and sterilized using ethylene oxide gas or other standard methods. Also described is a sterilizable ion-specific electrode which is suitable for medical applications and which is similar to the reference electrode except for the replacement of the nonspecific membrane with a species-selective membrane.
