PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic carbinol useful as a raw material for drugs and agricultural chemicals in high selectivity, by hydrogenating an aromatic ketone by the use of palladium catalyst supported on a carrier, which is pretreated in a solution containing a basic compound such as NaOH, etc. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining an aromatic carbinol [e.g., (p-isobutyl-phenyl) methylcarbinol, etc.] shown by the formula II by hydrogenating an aromatic ketone (e.g., p-isobutylacetophenone, etc.) shown by the formula I (R is H, or alkylhalogen; R is alkyl, or arylakyl; m is 1-3) in the presence of a palladium catalyst supported on a carrier such as active carbon, silica gel, alumina, etc., the catalyst is pretreated in a solution (preferably water or an alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, etc.) containing a basic compound (preferably alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal) and used.
