PURPOSE:To execute a layout display even if a display part is small in size by changing a line of a document to be brought to a layout display, so that a cursor position is displayed in the remaining layout area by a changing means, when the present cursor exists in a document area. CONSTITUTION:A display device for displaying a layout and a document on the same picture is provided with a dividing means for dividing a layout display area, and a discriminating means for discriminating whether a cursor position in the layout display exists or not in an area in which a part of the divided area is a document area, when a part of the area which has been divided by the dividing means is the document area. After it has been detected by the discriminating means that the cursor exists in said area, the layout display line is changed by a changing means, and a layout containing at least the present cursor position is displayed in the layout display area. Accordingly, a decrease of the document display area is reduced, and also the document and the layout can be made to correspond to each other exactly.
