PURPOSE:To obtain a device having a high operability by deciding automatically whether a sorting object data is a numeral or a character, when a sorting instruction has been executed, and switching a numerical sorting and a character sorting based on said instruction. CONSTITUTION:When a sorting instruction has been executed to a document which has been stored in a document memory 7, a sorting memory 8 stores a head address, a character length, and key which becomes a sorting object, with respect to each line of its document. An area for storing the key which becomes a sorting object is further divided into an integral part and a fraction part. A document buffer 9 rearranges and stores each line of the document memory 7 in accordance with a result of sorting of the sorting memory 8. A document pointer 10 designates a head address of an unprocessed part of the document memory 7, in a process for generating the contents stored in the sorting memory 8, based on the contents of the document memory 7. A sorting memory pointer 11 designates an address of the sorting memory 8 to be stored in the next time.
