NEW MATERIAL:An alpha-halo-alpha-trifluoromethyl-beta-aryl-propionic acid shown by the formula (Ar is substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group; X is Cl, or Br). EXAMPLE:alpha-Chloro-alpha-trifluoromethyl-beta-phenylpropionic acid. USE:A raw material for synthesizing alpha-trifluoromethylphenylalanine useful as an antihypertensive, capable of synthesizing a compound as an antihypertensive economically and efficiently. PREPARATION:A diazonium salt shown by the formula II is reacted with alpha- trifluoromethylacrylic acid in the presence of a copper catalyst in a solvent such as water, acetone, etc. at -10-50 deg.C to give a compound shown by the formula I.
