PURPOSE:In reacting an acylnaphthalene with a peroxide such as hydrogen peroxide, to obtain the titled substance useful for synthesizing a compound suitable as an additive such as plasticizer, etc., or drug, etc., easily in high yield, by reacting them in a solvent containing specific amounts of formic acid and water. CONSTITUTION:An acylnaphthalene shown by the formula I (R1 is 1-4C alkyl; R2 is 1-10C alkyl, or alkoxy; n=1-4) is oxidized with one of hydrogen perox ide, an organic peracid, and their mixture in a solvent containing 45-95wt% formic acid and at least 5wt% water, preferably 60-95wt% formic acid and 6-45wt% water, to give the aimed compound. The reaction is performed at 0 deg.C-100 deg.C, usually 10 deg.C-70 deg.C. Hydrogen peroxide is used industrially advanta geously in the reaction and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide used is usually 30-95wt%.
