PURPOSE:To produce a finely divided copper phthalocyanine in one step without the need of a pigmentation step, by reacting phthalic acid with a specific aromatic polybasic acid, copper, urea or ammonia and a diamine having two primary amino groups. CONSTITUTION:An intended copper phthalocyanine is prepared by reacting phthalic acid and/or its derivative with an aromatic polybasic acid of the formula (wherein R<1>-R<4> are each independently H or a group derived from a carboxyl group etc., provided that at least one of R<1>-R<4> is a carboxyl group on the like; and A and B are each independently carboxyl, nitrile, etc.) and/or its derivative, copper or its compound, urea and/or ammonia and a diamine having two primary amino groups in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst. Preferred catalyst includes molybdenum compounds such as ammonium molybdate and molybdenum oxide. The catalyst is generally used in an amount of 0.01-0.04 equivalent per 4mol of a phthalocyanine ring forming compound.
