PURPOSE:To make the gradation of clear picture quality possible by making the gradation pattern line-symmetrical for odd-numbered and even-numbered data lines. CONSTITUTION:An indication signal Ss for the presence or absence of a gradation transfer of a vertical synchronization signal, a horizontal synchronization signal and clocks CLK are inputted to a control circuit 11 and chrominance signals R, G, B constitution color picture data are stored by one line in the memory part 12 by the control of the circuit 11, and the R, G and B signals are read one dot for each time and supplied to a color conversion circuit 13. In the circuit 13, the three chrominance signals are converted into four ink chrominance signals under the control of a signal Si specifying the color of the heat transfer ink ribbon and the signal from a line counter 74, then supplied to a thermal head 15 where the required ink is fused to form the image. When the gradation transfer is specified by the signal Ss, the color signals of the ink are supplied from a circuit 13 to the head 15 so that the adjacent pixles consisting of four dots are line-symmetrical according as the number of the signal H counted by the counter 14 is odd or eve, and the pixels are staggered.
