PURPOSE:To enable detection of the optimal grinding amount for never grinding the base material of steel pipe by contacting three terminals against the opposite stop ends and the central section of the inner face bead of UOE steel pipe and operating the grinding amount of bead through an arithmetic unit on the basis of the difference between two levels of said terminals having higher lifting amount. CONSTITUTION:Three terminals 31a, 31b, 31c provided in bead height measuring device are contacted against the opposite stop ends and the central section of inner face bead 37 of UOE steel pipe 35 then the lifting amounts La, Lb, Lc of said terminals 31a, 31b, 31c are detected through sensors 33a, 33b, 33c. Said amounts La, Lb, Lc are fed to an arithmetic unit 38 then on the basis of the difference between two larger levels, Lc, Lb, for example, the grinding amount of bead 37 is calculated while on the basis of the difference between the remaining level La and the next larger level Lb, seam-offset is calculated thus to detect the optimal grinding amount for never damaging the base material of steel pipe.
