PURPOSE:To obtain in good yields the titled copolymer excellent in water solubility, water swellability, transparency and flexibility and useful as a highly water- absorptive resin or the like, by anion-polymerizing a mixture of a lactam with a specified polyol in the presence of a catalyst and an activator. CONSTITUTION:A lactam (A) such as epsilon-caprolactam is anion-polymerized with a polyol (B) such as a bifunctional polyethylene glycol, MW Of 100-3,000, having a hydroxyl group on each end at 100-200 deg.C for 10min-1hr in an inert gas atmosphere in the presence of 0.5-15mol%, based on component A, catalyst (C) selected from among alkali (alkaline earth) metals, their hydrides, (hydr) oxides, carbonates, alkoxy compounds, alkyl compounds, aryl compounds, Grignard reagents, etc., and salts thereof with a lactam, etc., and 1-15mol% activator (D) comprising an aliphatic bisaryllactam of the formula (wherein m is 2-10 and n and n' are each 3-6), derived from an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide and a lactam, and an aliphatic compound which can react with a lactam to form a bisaryllactam.
