The hand tool used consists of pliers with articulately connected arms, one end of each is formed as a hand grip, whilst at the other end one of them has a marking head and the end of the other is formed as a counterpiece. In the marking head is an impression wheel comprising several independently rotatable letter and/or number-bearing wheels (7). The impression wheel has a sprung component (8) for accommodating the casing (9) during the marking operation, and the counterpiece comprises a stamping cushion which deforms the casing (9), pressing it against the impression wheel when the hand grips are brought together. The sprung component comprises heel formations which encompass the casing at right-angles to its longitudinal axis. The casing is a closed tube with U-shaped cross-section, is plastically deformable, with two or more colour layers (10) of which the uppermost is pushed aside during the marking process.
