PURPOSE:To eliminate complicated operations caused by a tape speed switching job by switching automatically the driving speeds of a rotary magnetic head and a video tape according to each driving speed mode in a reproduction mode. CONSTITUTION:A tape speed switching device detects a recording mode by two beat signals S1 and S2 given from a beat signal generating means 2 and switches automatically the mode for reproduction. For this purpose, a switching means 13 is used to switch alternately both beat signals S1 and S2 for every one or two fields and delivers the 1st and 2nd discriminating signals S3 and S4 together with an output means 14 which obtains the output for switching the rotary magnetic head and the driving speed of a video tape T based on the cycle of both signals S3 and S4. Thus the recording mode can be detected accurately and a desired reproducing job is possible without carrying out any conventional complicated operation.
