PURPOSE:To eliminate change in hue by detecting and storing a scanning posi tion timing signal of each beam on the phosphorescent surface, switching a color image signal supplied to a G1 electrode on the basis of this signal and applying on the G1 electrode a hue signal corresponding to the color phosphors to emit the light by the incoming beam. CONSTITUTION:An index area 101B of a flat plate color cathode ray tube 100 which is the reference signal producing part outside of a color image display area is scanned at all time by the beam and the resulting signal is detected by a photo-electric converting element 102 so as to be used as the reference signal. The color image display area is scanned in advance by a direct current beam and the timing at which each beam scans the color phosphor is stored in a memory circuit 106 as the phase difference signal to the reference signal. When displaying the color image, the stored signals are read in synchronism with the reference signal and the timing of the color signal supplied to the C1 electrode is switched on the basis of the read signal so that the color signal corresponding to the color phosphor scanned by the beam are supplied to the G1 electrode to reproduce faithful the color image.
