PURPOSE:To eliminate the need of lateral shifting, to facilitate operation, and to prevent misoperation by providing a guide mechanism for regulating an insertion frame of a medium insertion port according to the kind of a medium, and detecting a medium inserted in the regulated insertion frame by means of the first and second detecting elements. CONSTITUTION:A control circuit 7 is adapted to determine the width of a medium according to the classification of a medium contained in a control command CND, apply the signal to a travel control circuit 8, and give a drive command to a driving circuit 9. If the travel is for a medium 21 having a large lateral width, the circuit 8 drives an electric motor 10 to move a guide 5 in such a manner to have the distance l1 between an indented portion of the forward end portion 5a of the guide 5 and the end portion of a medium detecting element 2. Thus, the lateral width for properly inserting the medium having the lateral width l1 is regulated, and the circuit 7 gives a reply to a host computer, so that the state of inserting a medium is brought, and the medium 2 is inserted in an area, the lateral width of which is regulated. When the medium 21 crosses medium detecting elements 2, 3 through an insertion port 11, the insertion of the medium 21 is confirmed. |
