PURPOSE:To use an epoxide as a raw material for producing organic chemical products, by producing the epoxide containing a corresponding aromatic ring from an aromatic ring-containing olefin by the use of a bacterium belonging to the genus Micrococcus, capable of producing the epoxide. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic ring-containing olefin is treated with a bacterium such as Microccous paraffinolyticus ATCC15589, etc. belonging to the genus Micrococcus, capable of producing an epoxide in the presence of a water- insoluble organic solvent under an aerobic condition. 9-17C paraffin, 10-18C olefin, 9-16C halogenated paraffin, etc., may be cited as the water-insoluble organic solvent. The epoxide produced in the reaction solution by the reaction is separated by a well-known method such as phase separation, extraction, etc., and collected.
