PURPOSE:To restrain coals stored outdoors from being degraded with less cost procedure by blowing inert gas continuously into the entire inside area of a coal heap with a necessary but minimum flow rate which is sufficient enough to maintain the oxygen gas concentration of the stated percentage. CONSTITUTION:In a method to restrain a coal heap stored outdoors from being degraded and also from generating heat by blowing inert gas such as nitrogen gas and the like into the coal heap, inert gas is allowed to be blown into the coal heap with a necessary but minimum flow rate which is sufficient enough to maintain the oxygen gas concentration of less than 5% in the entire inside area of the coal heap with the exception of the first stage of blowing. In parallel with the above mentioned method, a method for bonding under pressure is applied to the surface layer of the coal heap, and/or resin solution is sprayed all over the surface of the coal heap. Those methods restrain the coal heap stored outdoors effectively from being degraded throughout the entire period of storage by means of the continuous blow-in of the small volume of inert gas.
