PURPOSE:To prevent mis-correction by designing the circuit that a syndrome calculated from a code word group is never zero even when an error takes place in the code word group and the error is a long burst error exceeding the length of code. CONSTITUTION:Check words P1, P2 are generated to a new word group formed by adding a dummy information word of >=1 word to a predetermined position of the information word group in coding and the information word group and the check words P1, P2 form the code word group. Further, syndromes S1, S2 are produced to a new word group formed by adding a dummy information word to a predetermined position of the code word group in decoding and the error is detected to the code word group based on the syndromes S1, S2. Even if the error generated in the code word Cx is a long burst error, the syndromes S1, S2 calculated from the code word Cx are never zero.
